I want your novel soundtrack

Hey there, sassy ones.

I bet all you writer faces have soundtracks that get you in the mood to tackle that work in progress. I mention some of why music works for me in this post over here. There's a link, a conditioning where we link songs and feelings, creativity and lyrics. I want to know yours. What are you listening to while you write, these days?

Here's some of mine in no particular order. (you can assume everything Neko Case has ever done, and everything Florence and the Machine have ever done, too.)

The song to rule them all: Favorite, Neko Case

Videos have nothing to do with it. Tried to find the least obnoxious ones I could.

The Weepies, No One Knows Me at All

30 Seconds to Mars, Vox Populi

Darkest of the Hillside Thickets, Worship Me Like a God & Twenty Minutes of Oxygen

Hammerfall, The Unforgiving Blade

Waltz Across Texas Tonight, Emmylou Harris

Just a Thought, Gnarls Barkley

Be Like Water, Sarah Fimm

True Love, Mark Mallman (although this video is pretty rad if you're a Band of Brothers fan)

Red Hot, Jurassic 5

Wolf Like Me, TV on the Radio

Time is Running Out, Muse

More Than a Feeling, Boston

What Sarah Said, Death Cab for Cutie

Out Loud, Dispatch

Downtown Train, Tom Waits

This Fire, Killswitch Engage

Show me yours, guys! Tell me why you chose the songs you did, if you so choose.

Have a happy Campaign!

  1. I haven't come up with one for my current WiP. Usually sound tracks come after I'm well into a piece, striking without warning.

I did a post about some of the songs from my last WiP http://raelynbarclay.wordpress.com/2011/06/30/video-i-love-song-inspiration/

I see some I don't recognize on your list...off to check them out :)

  2. Hi! I followed you over from the campaign. I wish I had a novel soundtrack, but I prefer not to write to music. It's too distracting =P I need only the sound of my thoughts, namely because I am that easily distracted and pulled off course lol.

  3. I generally have the classical music station going while I write because the music is mostly instrumental, hence less distraction. Problem is, I like to have some background noise, but I find when I listen to other stuff, especially stuff I really, really like, I'm too busy singing along to get any writing done! Apparently I am still that distractible... ;-)

  4. Hi campaign buddy! Finally made it to your site and I'm now following you on Twitter :).

I make soundtracks for every book. I love, love, love Florence & The Machine, right along with you.

I won't share my soundtracks until I have a publishing contract. I know it sounds weird, but I'm kind of weird that way.

However, the last 4 songs I listened to were:

    Goodbye England by Laura Marling
    Smoke Without Fire by Duffy
    Pirate Bones by Natasha Bedingfield
Set Fire to the Rain by Adele

  5. I love that you have Neko Case and Waltz Across Texas on your soundtrack! Also, like Miho and Crystal, (Hi Crystal!) I'm totally distractable! I can't get in the zone while I'm writing if there's music in the background. However, when I'm away from my writing, I get songs in my head that remind me of my characters. Ex: Dog Days Are Over by Florence + the Machine

  6. @ Isis Have you heard Florence + the Machine's new song? OMG! Their new album is going to be even better than Lungs, I bet.

@ the rest of you. Wow, I didn't really think about the distraction angle overmuch but that's a good point. I think I am very lyrics oriented but I've been told that's not usual.

@ F.E. A quote from that song is going to open one of my future books.

  7. I only have one song so far since I'm not completed with my WIP: Dashboard Confessional's Stolen.
